Trilostane (brand names: Vetoryl®, Desopan®, Modrastane®, or Modrenal®) is used for the treatment of hyperadrenocorticism in dogs (Cushing's disease) and cats and Alopecia X in dogs.
For an 80-pound dog, it will cost over $2,000 a year, perhaps well over $2,000. It is wise to count the costs before beginning treatment.
There are two medications commonly used in the management of pituitary dependent Cushing's disease: Lysodren® (also called Mitotane or o,p'-DDD), Trilostane (brand name Vetoryl®).
The most common adverse reactions reported are poor/reduced appetite, vomiting, lethargy/dullness, diarrhea, and weakness. Occasionally, more serious reactions, including severe depression, hemorrhagic diarrhea, collapse, hypoadrenocortical crisis or adrenal necrosis/rupture may occur, and may result in death.
Vetoryl®, which is the only licensed treatment for use in dogs, contains the active ingredient trilostane, a drug that rapidly reduces the production of cortisol by the adrenal glands.
Without a constant supply of Vetoryl, cortisol production will increase and your dog may start to display symptoms of Cushing's once more.
Vetoryl for Dogs - From £1.13 per Capsule.
Control of the clinical signs of Cushing's Disease may be managed with the following medications: trilostane (vetoryl) or mitotane. Trilostane blocks the production of cortisol in the adrenal glands resulting in less circulating cortisol and a decrease in clinical signs.
Two drugs, trilostane (brand name Vetoryl®) and mitotane (brand name Lysodren®), are commonly used. Selegiline hydrochloride (brand name Anipryl®), and ketoconazole (brand name Nizoral®) are also used to treat canine Cushing's disease, although they are not considered as effective as trilostane or mitotane.
